JOAB HOUGHTON
Commissioned a Captain in the First NJ Regiment 19 Oct 1776, promoted to Lt. Col. on 9 Oct 1779 and transferred to Col. Taylor's State Troops
On sunday morning, 22 Apr 1775, a messenger arrived at the Meeting House in Hopewell, New Jersey, bearing news of Lexington and Concord and asking for volunteers. Joab Houghton mounted the horse block in front of the Meeting House and asked: "Who will go with me to Boston?" Every man stepped forward to form the Firat New Jersey Volunteer Company with Joab Houghton as Captain. A part of the old horse block now forms the slab of Joab's grave marker in Hopewell.
